What is bachata?

Bachata music originated in the Dominican Republic, emerging in the early 20th century as a genre that spoke to the joys and sorrows of everyday life. Bachata music is characterised by its soulful melodies, with a four-beat rhythm that provides a smooth, captivating pulse for dancers. It typically follows a 1-2-3-tap pattern, where the tap on the fourth beat includes a subtle hip movement, adding a unique sensuality to the dance. The core of the beat is driven by rhythmic guitar riffs, often accompanied by bongos, maracas, or guira, which add syncopated layers to the music. This combination creates a groove that feels both laid-back and expressive, allowing dancers to immerse themselves in the emotion and flow of the music.

Traditional Bachata is often danced with double hand hold or semi-open connection with incorporation of intricate syncopated footwork, whereas Modern and Sensual Bachata styles incorporate close embrace with with body rolls, and dips that enhance the connection between dancers and reflect the music’s emotive quality. The dance also incorporates body isolations, enabling dancers to expressively move their torsos and hips, creating a captivating visual that mirrors the richness of the music.
